The Sidney Oslin Smith, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse in Gainesville is named for one of Stewart, Melvin & Frost’s former partners – Sidney O. Smith Jr.
Smith was appointed to U.S. District Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. He remained on the bench until 1974, when he returned to private practice. Judge Smith passed away in 2012.
