Legal Briefs: Hall County’s Namesake a Leader for Independence

Hall County’s namesake Lyman Hall was one of the three Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence at the Continental Congress.

The Connecticut native graduated from medical school at Yale College. He bought land in Georgia in 1760 and began practicing medicine there. He became involved in revolutionary politics and was elected to the Continental Congress with Button Gwinnett and George Walton. During the Revolutionary War, he was involved in the procurement of food and medicine for the Continental Army.

After the war, he was elected to Georgia’s House of Assembly and then served as Governor. As Governor, he played a role in the establishment of the University of Georgia in 1785. He died in 1790 at the age of 66.
